Burst speed vs. sustained speed

A 15-second test measures your burst speed: how fast you can type when you are fresh and focused. Expect it to be 5–15% higher than your one-minute score, because there is no time to tire or lose concentration.

That makes short tests great for warm-ups and for practising speed, but use the one-minute typing test when you want a number that reflects everyday typing.

How to use short tests to get faster

Run five sprints in a row and watch the accuracy, not just the WPM. When you can hold 97% accuracy at a speed, push a little faster. Short tests are forgiving: a bad run costs you fifteen seconds, not a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my 15-second score higher than my 1-minute score?

Short tests measure peak speed. Over a longer test, small hesitations and fatigue pull the average down.

Is 15 seconds long enough for an accurate WPM?

It is accurate for burst speed, but a single mistake has a larger effect. Take the best of several runs, or use the 1-minute test for a steadier number.

Can I change the duration?

Yes. Use the 15s / 30s / 60s switch above the text. This page opens on 15 seconds.
